Watts Homecoming

My grandmother was an educator, business owner, spiritual healer, and pillar in our iconic LA quarter. She was raised in Watts on 108th and Hickory where she attended school all the way through Jordan High. She lived there well before it became a Black American community and opened 2 businesses: a cleaners and a fashion boutique. My mother was also an educator and business owner in our community. I remember her tugging me along while she took night classes at Southwest. She eventually got her degree and opened up her own daycare program. A complicated life they both lived, nonetheless I am grateful for healing and the continuation of my lineage. Today, I carry on the legacy. I’m proud to announce 2 free community yoga classes in my old neighborhood!!

Watts Public Library was a safe haven for me growing up in South Central in the 90s. It’s where I got my first library card and cultivated my love of reading. So of course it is a glorious experience to share yoga in this space. Join me June 1st at 4pm for a free yoga session at the iconic Alma Reaves Woods – Watts Branch Library!! Fun fact: Alma Reaves Woods was my neighbor and my dad was her unofficial landscaper. I’m also partnering with Our Watts Bookshop to facilitate a free yoga class at the CHILDREN'S INSTITUTE on June 14th at 10:30am. Class is sponsored by Compton G.irls Club.

Y’all, this is literally a dream come true for me. I thank the creator for aligning me with genuine people to further healing in our community. Watts stand tf up!!!
