Recipe: Stuffed Dates for Postpartum Wellness

According to Ayurveda, the first 42 days post-partum will influence the next 42 years of the mother’s life. During this special time, it is vital that we draw attention to foods that balance Vata dosha, build Ojas, and are Sattvic in nature. Whether vaginal or cesarean, birth is physically, mentally, and emotionally depleting for Vata. This dosha governs the postpartum period and is the dosha that easily falls out of balance if not nurtured. Accumulated Vata may result in anxiety, digestive ailments, and feeling ungrounded. The good news is, it is easy to balance Vata and find harmony with the right practices.

Tips To Balance Vata

Vata is light, cold, mobile, and dry. Ayurveda maintains that like attract like, and opposite balance. Imagine it is a cold, windy day. Would you see yourself grabbing an iced-coffee, wearing shorts and flip-flops? Probably not! Warm, heavy clothes with a toasty beverage will surely be more comforting.

Favor warm, heavy, stable, and oily qualities. Try preparing a hearty soup with root veggies that are well oiled. Feeling overwhelmed and mentally fatigued? Try using a weighted blanket on your legs during meditation. Focus on tastes that are naturally sweet, sour, and salty and reduce or avoid tastes that are bitter, astringent, and pungent.

The recipe below is the perfect postpartum snack because it helps to build Ojas—our immunity and primal vigor— and promotes vitality and joy, which makes it naturally Sattvic. Make a batch of these stuffed dates and you will have a nourishing treat to enjoy anytime. Let me know how you like it!
