Postpartum Wellness
This period can be a tricky road to navigate with many in physical, emotional, and spiritual distress. One might feel the societal pressure to get back to the workplace or attain the snap back body. Luckily, Ayurveda and yoga have many suggestions for restoring balance during this sacred time. Postpartum yoga is a nourishing practice of restoration and healing. It is not about obsessing over the pre-pregnancy body or pushing yourself beyond your limit. Instead, it’s about giving yourself space to cultivate body awareness and self compassion. The fourth trimester is governed by the vata dosha. Vata, ether and air, controls all motion in the body and mind and becomes weak during the delivery of the baby. We know that vata is naturally cold, light, dry, and mobile. Reducing vata and bringing in its opposite qualities will bring forth a smooth transition and restore balance.
Here are a few tips to reduce vata:
Freshly prepared, warm soups
Sweet, salty, and sour tastes
Avoiding or reducing processed foods
Avoiding sensory overload
Slowing down
Going to bed early and waking up with the sun
Keeping the body warm
Having a daily routine
Restorative yoga with a long savasana
Weighted blanket over the legs during meditation
Connecting to the spirit world (prayer, meditation, journaling, nature walks, etc)
If vata increases, it can become aggravated and lead to instability. Do your best and try at least one of these tips for more restoration. Remember, postpartum is forever so there is no need to rush the process.
